DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It took me 4 months from ideation to a functional prototype.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: The Singapore Police Force approached SIMTech to develop a product, making use of our printed lighting technology, to replace their current beacons for roadblock purposes. We then proceeded to further our research in the hazards and operational space to further develop the product to cater for other scenarios.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: The design cues for this product were skewed towards the robust tech and rugged look. The form drew inspiration from a variety of moodboards like sci-fi and technologically advanced designs.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: The target customers for the design are anyone that requires a highly visible barrier to cordon off areas, organise and direct crowds.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: The versatility of the product to be able to adapt to various terrain and surroundings and the ability to illuminate and animate the barrier tape sets this design apart from all others, making it the first in the world.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: Eluminance is derived from the word illuminance. This play of words makes Eluminance and illuminance homophones, with "EL" in Eluminance representing the term electroluminescent.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: There are 3 main programs that i use while working on this project. Rhinoceros 3D for modelling and Luxion Keyshot for realistic rendering. Photoshop was then used to composite the renders into real life scenarios to illustrate the uses.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The ability to illuminate and program running animation on a barrier tape.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Scientists and specialists from SIMTech's Large Area Processing (LAP) unit assisted with the production and programming of the barrier tape.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Technology takes center stage in this design, it illuminates the barrier tape and allows running directional animation. Making the barrier tape highly visible from a distance and in low lighting conditions while providing clear and concise directions.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Desk research on the statistics collected and interviews with on-ground personnel during police and civil defense operations have yielded crucial insights on improvements to safety, logistics and ease of deployment in current operations.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: Achieving the fine balance between power required and tape length, coupled with the ever-changing environments/situations the product will be used in.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: Winning an international design competition will put SIMTech on the global stage and also act as a testament of our design capabilities. Showcasing our ability to fuse cutting edge technology with good design. Resulting in the creation of products that utilises technology to change lives for the better.
