DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: For this product, we were inspired by the idea of how an object can simultaneously transform a public space and encourage social interaction through its configuration. The shape of this picnic table has a shared table top and seats that face one another to encourage users to spend time with each other. It is a central meeting point where people can enjoy a variety of social activities such as being with their friends and family, having a picnic, or simply sitting down to work.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: Develop a product that is well-designed throughout all its production stages including its manufacturing, distribution, assembly, installation, and social impact.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: We would like to see it transforming its surroundings in more and more public spaces. Our goal is to create a product whose aesthetics remain current throughout the years of its long useful life.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: From January to September 2016.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: It is the result of an analysis we undertook into the current lack of infrastructure that invites us to enjoy and make the most of our city.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: Currently, it is only sold in Mexico by BKT urban furniture.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: Our interest to improve cities.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: Our work is not only influenced by designers, but also people with different knowledge bases who contribute positive ideas towards improving our society.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Our main clients are builders, architects, planners, governments, landscapers and urban planners, however our end users are citizens.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: The MP-002 is a piece that distinguishes itself thanks to its high level of user-product interaction that facilitates an atmosphere of coexistence. Its qualities include its easy assembly, its warm aesthetics, and the low number of materials needed for its construction.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: BKT urban furniture names all its products using a code based on the product type and a consecutive number.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: User-based design methodology, sketching, 3D modeling software, laser cutting for cardboard modeling.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: Its ease of assembly.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: We work together with experts in the metalworking and carpentry industry with many years of experience in their trade.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Technology was of utmost importance in order to achieve our desired aesthetics and quality. We used CNC machines for laser cutting and bending metal parts.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Our creative process was based on our observations of public spaces and how people make use of them. Their activities included spending time together, reading, rest, and work, among others.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The challenge was to develop a product with as few pieces as possible while maintaining a subtle aesthetic and achieving a functional product.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: When designing this product we realized that it had the qualities to compete in prestigious international competitions.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: When developing any product we are always obliged to investigate, observe and project. These processes introduce us to new areas of knowledge, bring us closer to people who share their experience and awaken us the concern of analyzing the environment by contributing ideas on how to improve it.
