DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: The design consistency and proportion of shape are the main principle.
The living environment and social culture are important for my design inspiration thought my observation.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: The original z shape plan of this flat is a constrain for the design. Beside, the client does not want to demolish existing walls for a new layout plan. If I could not change the plan layout, then it is not easy to receive nature light through windows, especially there are not many windows in this flat. As this project's conceptual name: Urban Twilight, I want to use those windows to get nature sunlight as much as I can get. The nature sunlight is the source of space ambiance to brighten the space and materials.
So, in this project, I avoided to build partition walls to cut the visual connection between spaces. I always think about how to bring more lights.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: I would like to promote my design studio and to know more creative people from different countries.
It's a great opportunity to exchange the ideas and perhaps visit each other soon.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: Official design period is 3 months, but I kept adjusting the design in the design phase and construction phase.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: The design idea is from surrounding. Every time I visit the site, I cannot pretend I don't see the nature sunlight is gonna be important in this design.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: The owner has many imaginations of this living space. There were some good ideas discussed and agreed. The good dialogues made me a desire to pursuit the design quality.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Residential
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The flat is in 9th floor, which is higher than adjacent buildings.
So it's a benefit for receiving sunlight and looking at sky and mountain range through windows.
In the evening and morning, light comes in the room, it gives a dramatic feeling.
Based on this experience and design intent, I come out "Urban Twilight" for this project name.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Hand sketches, CAD, 3D software
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: Facade of the interior design. The design details for the joints between materials.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Metal Craftsman, Carpenters
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Laser cutter, Laser wield
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The flat itself is narrow. We were told to keep existing layout and partition walls. Without changes of layout and partition walls, it is not easy for designer to create something different. We tended to create fine and neat details for design characters, so trial and error took large portion in the design process. We had to work closely with craftsmen and took measurements frequently for setting out on site.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: By participating international design competition is a way to see how other international designers think and produce.
It's also important to get comments form other designers.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: Learnt from resolving the problems.
