DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: To do a lot with air. To just push the thing to the minimum.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: I was looking for a way to make a synthesis of what a fountain pen has to be, at least, today.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: Its going into production as the Venvstas Carbon T fountain pen.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It was a development of an earlier idea, so, can't tell. It was made in a brief period of time as it was initially a commission.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: Initially was a commission to make an important gift for professors of an architecture master school in Germany, eventually they couldn't face the costs of the project and the commission was doped. I took back the design and made it part of the Venvstas collection, with the intention of replacing a prior design that had very high manufacturing costs. This one was better suited for mass production.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: Right now Venvstas, a brand I co-own. We decided to put it on mass production.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: Initially a commission, they wanted this gift, but I saw the potential of the design to be in the Venvstas collection, as, its really a nice piece.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: No. The commissioner wanted a pen with a clip, which in the Venvstas final model is absent.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: It was designed with architects on mind, but, the target is anybody who wants a well designed pen, for writing or sketching.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: To my surprise, there are a lot of cylindrical pens on the market.......tons, but none like this one. Its just a couple of details that are making it unique.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: Carbon T, was just carbon technique. A technical pen in a way, its made of carbon fiber.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: a saw.......it was made on the spot.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: Although is such a small item, the open-close system. Its unique to this pen.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Nobody really, but maybe the original client in a way, as he wanted a clip, and that was it. I couldn't adapt one to other existing designs, so this one was made to have a clip. Its a very simple question, but sometimes the client help by being very vague and not really knowing what to expect.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: New materials....working with composites.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The clip, although its gone....it had to be integrated to the design. Some technical aspects about the construction of the object.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: The brand, Venvstas, its where this and other of my designs are residing. We started to get copied. Winning an award is a good way of setting a precedent, to let know that the product is out there. You cannot avoid being copied, and good stuff usually gets copied, that's the norm. This happens, but to be copied at the beginning can be a problem!
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: I would say that I have finally learned to do with nothing. To strip things.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: no, not really, its just a pen.
