DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: While climate change is all over the news, it does not seem to be reaching our minds. There is still a lot of power accumulated in the automotive and oil industry. The metaphoric hand grenade image plays with the urgency and high risk of facing extensive natural disasters. The central theme of the illustration is the global environmental crisis as a highly explosive sociopolitical matter.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: With this radically hyperbolical illustration showing a hand grenade filled with cars I intend to provoke a sense of awareness to this global topic. The European traffic light system uses the colors yellow or orange as warning signals to point out dangers in traffic. Taxis use the color yellow to call attention as well. The idea of connecting the warning color yellow with the yellow cars and the blazing light of an explosion came to me at the thought of the daily traffic and the increasing threat of natural disasters that should be seen as a warning sign.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: I would like the work to be published and start a conversation about environmental pollution.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: The poster was created in Summer 2018 in Vienna.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: I decided to pursuit an inspiration. I wanted to target the crucial state of the environment.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: As of right now the design is not being produced or used by another company and I intent to produce my work myself.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: I wanted to point out the crucial and explosive state of the climate crisis and to visualize it in the most irritating and uncomfortable way.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: This project was developed as a motif for print products. The advantage of the digital production is the versatile applicability in different print areas. As the selection of mockups shows, the project is suitable for outdoor use, as an indoor poster, but also for publication in magazines, or as a book cover.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The Big Bang bang refers to the global environmental crisis as a highly explosive sociopolitical matter.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: This Poster was entirely created digitally with Procreate on iPad Pro.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: While the almost toy-like vehicles suggest a playful theme, the tension through the shape of the object is undeniable. The metaphoric hand grenade image plays with the urgency and high risk of facing extensive natural disasters, in this case air pollution caused by cars. The central theme of the illustration is the global environmental crisis as a highly explosive sociopolitical matter.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Actually technology is the main theme of the illustration. We need to talk about environmentally friendly technology for our future.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: One of the challenging questions which came up was how I could most effectively point out the crucial and explosive state of the climate crisis and to visualize it in the most irritating and uncomfortable way.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: To me it is important to show the social aspects of my work. In this case I would like to reach as many people as possible to start a conversation about climate change and environmental challenges.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: Individual traffic causes a lot of air pollution and massively harms our environment. With this radically hyperbolical illustration showing a hand grenade filled with cars I intend to provoke a sense of awareness to this global topic.
