DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: The guiding principle for EC23 is to create a user-centric vacuum cleaner based on usability and comfort of use.
A compact design with a modular system that allows for customized usage is resulted from our guiding principle.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: The size, ergonomics and convenience and ease of use is our main focus in designing EC23. In an effort to reduce the stress and fatigue of the wrist and arms during cleaning, unnecessary spaces and adornment is reduced to a minimum in bid to make it as compact as possible. Thus in turn, reducing the Moment forces see-saw effect in a large/long vacuum.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: With EC23 as a basis, we will continue to develop and improve to create better designs.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: This design was done as a project for the company, to challenge on the notion of "the bigger the better" of other vacuum cleaners in the market.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: The design was done in-house for the company.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: Market research, customer feedback and needs inspired design compact vacuum cleaners.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: We had researched on other existing vacuums to compare the user-experience and feedback as factors of what is needed in the design.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: working adults who pursue a product for it's comfort of use, small and compact design.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: The size and modular system of it's filtration and accessories allows for customized cleaning, while reducing stress and fatigue on the arms, resulting in comfort during cleaning task.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The name is a incremental number of our series of vacuum cleaners
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Rhinoceros 3D and solidworks were used to design this project.
These 3d programs allows design and engineering analysis to plan, design and create a design with no wasted parts or spaces.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The modularity of the accessories and filtration system, allowing for a customized cleaning experience.
The compact size of the vacuum, while not sacrificing the ability to clean.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: We collaborated as a team of designers, engineers and mold makers to analyse various aspects of the design from usability, production, fitting,heat dissipation and user experience.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: The company's Patented technology is infused into the design to allow for the modular filtration system that differs from others in the market.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Our design has been influenced with analysis of user experience. As the company deals in the end user sales, we were able to collect data and feedback of the customers and what they feel were the pain points in using other vacuums.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The balancing of compact spaces and aesthetics were the biggest challenge. As our main aim was the usability, we had to make it as compact as possible while making sure it does not affect the outlook negatively.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: We decided to submit it as a way to have an independent panel of judges to evaluate our work, thus, giving us an insight as to what we could improve on on future designs and products.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: We had learn to look at design more comprehensively, with different intangible aspects affecting the usability of a product.
