DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: Reader Collection draws inspiration from mechanism of canvas easel and the way it can be assembled and the simplicity of movement and use. I wanted to use simple elements, play with them by rotating and trying to achieve different positions.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: I wanted to design a lamp which light positioning can be manually changed by rotating two main elements around each other. I wanted to offer different positions and expressions of light.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: I would like to produce this lamp on bigger scale.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: The first idea of a single Reader lamp started in 2013. The idea of collection came up later when I wanted to show variety of materials and show more elegant touch through applied materials.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: I wanted to create a practical bed-side lamp that I could use myself and that can at the same time be a nice object in the room.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: I made prototypes with a local carpenter. I already have production rights under my own name and I would like to produce it on bigger scale probably myself.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: I needed a bedside lamp and I wanted to design something that I could potentially. I wanted it to be functional, practical and beautiful object that brings light in a smart way.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: I have always been inspired by Japanese architecture and design and the simplicity and minimalism of their creations.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Men and woman in a more modern bedroom (residential space).
Men and woman in a more modern living room and working space (residential space).
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: The minimal mechanism of the lamp; how easy it can change the light and bring different atmospheres to the space; and functions it can provide by rotation.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: This collection is mainly designed for those who enjoy reading in bed. This is why the collection is named Reader Collection.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: I made a lot of concept sketches, physical mock-ups, 3D models and prototypes.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The way different materials are packed into a concept of easel mechanism. The choice of materials, combination of traditional material such as wood and LED technology.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: I worked with carpenters, metal workers and electricians.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Traditional material, wood stores the LED component which is a more modern technology. The mix of traditional and modern light technique is highlighted.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: My design is not influenced by any data or analytical research but it is more influenced by mechanisms of movements. In this particular case I was making a research on different canvas easels and the way they work and how are they used. I was researching on type of movements that I can provide with this collection of lamps and how can the user with two simple movements obtain different light expressions.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: One of the challenges was to be able to place LED component into such a narrow area of wood and run the cable along the wooden part. Everything had to be pact in such a delicate form.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I think it's a big challenge. I would like to know where I stand on the international level.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: At first, I started from I single lamp. My first prototype had only the basic elements that were explaining my concept. Later through more tests and sketches I started redefining the form and made it more elegant, defining edges of the lamp and working on details. When design of a single Reader lamps was practically done I thought that I could do even more in terms of materials and that this would add more elegant look to Reader lamp. This is how Reader Collection was born. The will of experimenting with materials brought wider choice for customers.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: Design is the way of thinking. It is a long process that requires full time commitment.
