DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: I wanted to create an armchair which is interesting for several generations and useable in different fields. The idea is to develop various models with the same rack-system but different seats - modern: perforated plate and cloth, classic: wood and leather, outside: stainless perforated plate and Rattan. The armchair is intended for relaxing areas like living rooms, waiting zones, offices, lounges and cafe bars.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: My main focus was to develop a compact armchair with a rack without ornamentations and additional constructions. The minimized one pipe construction should be immediately visible. It should base on the required minimum of physics and material, be soft, comfortable and cosy - with armrests. Harmonious from all sides, also from below.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: To find a company which will produce and distribute my chair.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It took 3 month to complete this design concept.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: My challenge was to develop a whole collection of chairs and armchairs based on my own rack system (xifix2base), according to classic metal pipe chairs.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: I plan to sell or lease my product.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: I need cosy armchairs for my daughter's living room.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Everybody who enjoys modern and cosy armchairs.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: It is a compact armchair with a modern and smart design, reduced to a minimum of construction.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The name - xifix - is my pseudonym - Juergen Goetzmann - alias xifix - the one man group. xifix2base - is my second rack-system. arm-chair-one - is my first armchair in this rack-system. These working titles are a system to catalogue my designs.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Wire and plasticine.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The most unique aspect is the endless pipe construction. So I created a loop form, which achieves the stability of the rack.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: To reduce the form and technology to a minimum.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: The ergonomics of the chair was adapted to the physiognomy of an average person.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: To form the one-pipe-rack with a loop that matches the ergonomics of man - under consideration of the esthetics and the feasibility.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I want to find a company which will manufacture and sell my designs.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: I learned how interesting it is to work with the same rack-system but different materials.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: No - but I like to use this possibility to express thanks for the professional tendering and support of this competition.
