DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
FS : The design follows a modular approach while maintaining a sensual, appealing form language. Intersecting volumes and soft transitions characterise the overall design.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
FS : We were looking to develop a design that appeared at the same time solid and professional. While also expressing the sensual part and indulgence of perfectly prepared beverages.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
FS : At the moment the product is on the market and quite successful. We're currently considering some minor updates to keep the product relevant and maybe introduce it to other markets as well.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
FS : The complete product development process from initial concept to final product took about three years.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
FS : The Flavia range needed a new and smaller product to compete in a specific market segment.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
FS : The appliance has been developed by Lavazza Professional and is currently in production. It is an important part of the Flavia product range.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
FS : We had to develop a new design while also developing and evolving the brand identity and form language of Flavia.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
FS : In the initial phase of the development for the C300 we collaborated with Studio Volpi.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
FS : The product was developed mainly for small and medium size offices and the north american market.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
FS : The appliance offers a complete range of hot and cold beverages in a comparatively small footprint and at a competitive price. They also evolve the form language of Flavia to the next level.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
FS : The naming follows the general logic of Flavia appliances. The C stands for Creation and the number is an indicator of the size and place within the product range.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
FS : The design process involved everything from analog and digital sketching to 3D modeling, mock-ups and prototypes.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
FS : The modularity of the design allows different modules to be placed next to each other. There is also an unprecedented attention to detail and sophistication compared to other products in this segment.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
FS : The design was developed by the small in-house team in collaboration with colleagues from the technical department.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
FS : Technology is making sure the user experience is intuitive and pleasant across the whole user journey. Also the Flavia IQ smart technology and online portal let you manage drinks and consumption data in a fraction of the time.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
FS : Key aspects of the user experience were verified through specific consumer tests.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
FS : The product had to find the right balance in developing an appealing design while maintaining a modular approach that allows for all the elements to be placed next to each other.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
FS : Design competitions play an important part in communication. They help in product and brand positioning. This is why we submit our products to these competitions.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
FS : As always - you have the chance to learn new things with every new project. Here we had the chance to put our focus on the north american market and the specific needs users have there.
