DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
TDL : Migration was come up from a Chinese idiom-“like a fish in the water”. It’s a metaphor we use that home is the only place makes people feel at ease and peace.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
TDL : Infinity, the mathematical symbol, is an idea of interior flow that people can strongly feel like Fish Migration with the flow. With the use of black iron, concrete, and old woods to create different air flow, light and extension of vision. Migration conveys the sense of simplicity and silence which also are represented the households’ lifestyle and living philosophy.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
TDL : Plan and promote the initial successful experience and share it with existing and future customers。
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
TDL : The formulation of the concept can be very long or very short. For me, it is only through the accumulation of life and literature for a long time that I have such a view of things, and it can also be said that is my design philosophy, so the creation of the concept is determined in a moment like a flash of aura.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
TDL : The physical conditions of the project, customer needs, and my own views on the design, through the mutual agitation of these three, the concept naturally formed in this way.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
TDL : The conditions and characteristics of the project itself, of course, there must be an owner who believes in me and has good taste.(smile)
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
TDL : The design culture and connotation of different countries, literary classics have a great impact on me, especially these invisible cultural connotations, maybe these are my spiritual food.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
TDL : Our design is specially customized for each different customer, so there will not be the same target customer.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
TDL : This design concept combines the life philosophy of the owner and the physical conditions of the house itself. Whether it looks similar or not, it will be fundamentally different in the meaning.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
TDL : The name of traveling comes from the Chinese idiom "like a duck to water".
People means the duck, water means the home. It implies that the home is a place where people can feel ease and settle, and the movement in the house also echoes the form and meaning of traveling.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
TDL : Hand Painted, AutoCAD SketchUp Photoshop.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
TDL : Keeping the original wall will be regarded as a shortcoming, but for me it is full of features and stories.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
TDL : Although it was designed independently, but it is an honor to work with a humorous and technical construction team.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
TDL : It requires excellent technical skills to present the imaginary design perfectly.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
TDL : Due to the old age of the house, the original organic energy and structure can no longer meet the needs of modern use. We must perform precise calculations on the existing structure and carry out the construction without damaging the existing structure, just like a doctor performing a surgical operation on the house.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
TDL : In this case, the house is old and in poor condition. In order to meet the needs of the newly added functions, there are various challenges in engineering construction, structural reinforcement, and space design. Although the process is full of challenges, it is finally completed the design project through accurate design and planning.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
TDL : I Hope to prove and test myself in the international design platform.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
TDL : Getting full research and preparation in advance is always right. Through this opportunity of this project, I got a good experience and tested the experimental approach successfully.
