DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
RDS : One of the main goals of technology is to bring people together. Makes us save time in our daily tasks so we can spend more quality time with our family and friends. Social media helps us keep in touch with the ones we love and miss, but sometimes drives us apart from the ones who are next to us. With Voltbox this issue is now just one more reason for us to interact and improve our coexisting!
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
RDS : Current mobile phones use more battery power for all of the applications and the battery life of the phone is depleted rapidly causing the need to recharge the device more often. Typically a person does not carry a charging device or a wireless speaker with them and if so they often may not have access to a power outlet. The present invention for charging mobile phones in public places will offer a much-needed convenience.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
RDS : Promote my brand and expand the range of electronic device development.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
RDS : It took me around 2 months to come up with this idea.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
RDS : The project was commissioned by Voltobox with the aim of developing a product that would differentiate itself from the power competitors.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
RDS : The product was designed for Voltbox LLC.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
RDS : During an exhaustive search in several markets, I felt that we could do something that no one has done so far, which was to combine multiple-charger with a speaker in a very compact product.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
RDS : Bose products, influenced me due to their robustness and portability.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
RDS : All kinds of cell phone users.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
RDS : It combines a power bank with a speaker.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
RDS : The name came from the simple creation of a box that through electrical components could charge several devices at the same time. Hence the combination of Volt (electrical) with Box.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
RDS : For the initial steps of the design process I use, Pen, Paper, and Clay. In the following next steps, when the refinement of the design takes place, the best options are 3D modeling and 3D printing.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
RDS : Functional simplicity and portability.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
RDS : With Voltbox's Business development manager, Cristiano Milek, the manufacturers Simple living tech and Shenzhen Golden Rainbow Precision.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
RDS : Is to charge 4 devices at once while plays the favourite tunes on the Bluetooth speaker.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
RDS : Most of the research was done visiting the electronic markets in Shenzhen, taking notes on what was trendy and what was new products were launched at that time.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
RDS : The main obstacle was to get the highly restrictive UL certification keeping the ergonomically adequate dimensions for a portable product and its multi functionalities.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
RDS : I was invited by the A'Design Award & Competition team to submit this project.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
RDS : The design contest helped me to improve my design methodology and evaluate my design with other designers. That being said, now I'm more capable and confident about where I could on the upcoming product development.
