DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
HR : The main idea is to design a vase which aids in flower arrangement and also improves the post harvest life of cut flowers.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
HR : I wanted the vase to aid flower arrangement in different patterns and make addition of water easy without disturbing the arrangement and at the same time to allow air circulation around the stems.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
HR : I would like to commercialize it.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
HR : This particular concept was designed for those who love flower arrangement. I decided to pursuit an inspiration.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
HR : I wanted to provide arrangement aids so that users can arranged in a pattern. So, the bird Peacock inspired me to developed the form into a bird with long upright tail and a detachable wing piece which has perforations in a pattern. The semi open form also helps in air circulation for reducing bacterial growth.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
HR : Flower lovers.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
HR : Follow Me does not only hold flowers. It provides aids for arranging flowers in a pattern and also improves the post harvest life of cut flowers by reducing bacterial growth around the stems due to semi open form. Water or chemical solutions can be easily added below the wing piece without disturbing the flower arrangement. And more over the vase has been designed to be a functional sculpture.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
HR : "Follow Me" means follow the patterns on the wing piece to arrange the flowers.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
HR : Solidworks, Keyshot
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
HR : Arrangement aids in pattern and semi open form, detachable wing pieces.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
HR : During manufacturing
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
HR : Research on improving post harvest life of cut flowers and conditioning of flowers.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
HR : The challenge was to solve a conflicting criterion and bring the bird form and functions together. For easy adding of water, wide mouth is good but it does not provide enough aid for arranging flowers in pattern. Additional aid may be needed for arrangement. The design has been developed as semi open form with three pieces separating the conflicting functions. The perforated wing part serves as the aid, while user can easily add water below the wings. The large gap also allows air circulation.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
HR : I felt it was a good design.
