DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LC : Inorganic substances, as recognizable compounds, have become the primary environmental condition for people in cities to rely on. Based on Taiwan's history, it is understandable to see a delicate balance between the social class and quality in cities. Lee engages the artworks with the environmental elements and emphasizes that the natural generative context covers all the changes as well as details on the earth today. For that reason, he sheds light on the relationship between his artworks and space where they settle.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LC : The theme of this series of works is to investigate the nature of materials and how materials, after being disassembled, can be reconstructed by the aesthetic system and new perspective. Lee also probes into the utilization of plants in the city apart from the outdoor landscape. The redefinition and reconstruction of plants and other artificial materials may make natural landscape have an emotional impact on people.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LC : I will continue to create artworks.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LC : It took us a month to complete the production.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LC : I decided to set this concept myself because I consider the changes in the environment need to be presented artistically.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LC : The works are produced by me and my company “Botaniplan von Lee Chi”, and the artworks are all sold and rent.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
LC : I want to present the intersection between the environment and humans in the form of artworks.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LC : I like to see all types of design, as well as the process and solving ability of different designers thinking about an issue.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
LC : We have not set a target customer.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LC : Computers, pens, and all of related equipments that will be used to complete the artwork.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LC : I think the most unique aspect in our designs is to deconstruct the landscape and texture in Taiwan's cities and then from which let the artworks demonstrate the spiritual images of the environment and the connection between different material compositions.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LC : Myself, and a team with various backgrounds including fine art, architecture, fashion, and industrial design.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LC : This series of works explores the way to make the non-recyclables produced non-unidirectional value under the economic system. It carries out experiments on its development potentials and various techniques of the manufacturing process based on the nature of materials. Therefore, the inorganic waste can be recycled and remade as mixed media for artworks.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LC : The main challenge is how to respond to changes in the reality.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LC : Executed by my team.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LC : Through the design process, we are more aware of the environmental issues that we have been paying attention to, and we need to work harder to solve them through design.
