DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
PY : The design is inspired by the very first watch face I did for my first smartwatch. It is called "Simple code". It is just a prototype for a test. It does not even look like the Simple Code II now. However, the prototype gave me the inspiration. For example, the date number is to be at the center of the watch so that the user does not need to look for where the date is.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
PY : The main focus is to make the user check the time, date, and other information more easily. Check the date of the current month without aiming where the date number is, besides, the date at the center does not occupy other space so the dial does not look crowded.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
PY : Maybe more color combinations will come out. Make it a flagship category of my future designs.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
PY : The concept is from the prototype. I did not spend much time to get the ideas, maybe about one or two days.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
PY : After I got the prototype done, I started thinking about how to put more information into a small dial while keeping it from looking crowded.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
PY : This design is done for me. Currently, I don't have plan to sell it. If any company wants to buy it, I would like to hear.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
PY : Ease of using. The speed of checking time. To make people's life easier.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
PY : No, no other designs. The influence is from my prototype.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
PY : From casual user to business user, basically, everyone.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
PY : The elements in the dial (eg. step count) shifts its position to avoid being overlapped by the hour hand. For example, at 8 am or 8 pm, the hour hand overlaps the step count numbers. So the step count shifts its position to elsewhere so user can still check step number easily.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
PY : The name is from the prototype name, Simple code. This design is considered as an upgraded version. So I named it Simple Code II.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
PY : I use the app called Watchmaker.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
PY : The Aesthetic and the user experience.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
PY : No, I didn't collaborate with others.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
PY : This design is more focused on the user experience. For the technical part, there is not much to deal with.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
PY : I didn't do any research. The idea is from the prototype.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
PY : The challenge is to shift the elements on the dial from being overlapped, meanwhile to still keep the overall aesthetic.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
PY : The last year winning gave me confidence in my design so I know where I can go in to. Besides, I want this Simple Code II design to earn its international recognition.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
PY : I usually use it by myself for a while to get the insight of which part can be improved, and then gradually make some changes to the design.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
PY : You can download this watch face from the Samsung galaxy store, from the Watchmaker App, and from the Facer app.
