DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: The brand identity is influenced by the Arabic language and its typography. We think, speak, live, and breathe in our mother tongue. The bilingualism allows us to approach design with no preference for right to left, or left to right. We see and understand linguistic patterns and connections, weaving this insight into our branding and identity design.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: Abno is an acronym of our names and is also the name of our design company. We wanted to portray our global identities as bilingual designers working in both Arabic and English. When displayed online or in print, the logo can be rotated 180 degrees to be read in either language. The text in black reads abno in the Latin alphabet. The text in pink reads abno in Arabic script.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: The brand has been on going since 2009, small tweaks here and there were done but essentially the logo remains almost the same. This is a great achievement, to still have it relevant and special years after creation. We will continue to grow with this abno brand, either taking it into new directions or adding to the existing one.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It has been in the works for years. The first logo was created in a few hours as we had a clear vision of what we wanted. The idea for the design emerged instinctively. The tweaking happened yearly till we got to where it is now.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: Its the branding of our own design company.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: We are the owners and users of this branding.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: To fulfill the need of having a brand that represents us.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: Different ambigrams.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Clients that are looking to create brands or grow their brands further.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: It is purely customized to our initials and way of thinking.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: Abno is both an acronym of our names, as well as an abbreviation for abnormal (meaning the unusual).
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: The logo was hand sketched, scanned and then transferred into vectors using Adobe Illustrator.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The logo can be rotated 180 degrees to be read in either Arabic or English. It conveys our brand identity as bilingual designers, who work in both Arabic and English. The text in black reads abno in the Latin alphabet. The text in pink reads abno in Arabic script.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: We created it together, as abno.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Using Adobe illustrator to create the logo and all the print material for the brand.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Not really, it was instinctive.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The challenge was adapting both languages in a way that does not seem forced and flows nicely.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: A’ Design Awards sent us an email regarding other projects that we worked on, so we decided to submit the brand that we created for our own design company.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: That designs needs to last long. We always make sure that whatever we design can last at-least five years and up.
