DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: Design of the desk “Herringbone” was inspired by Baltic folk motifs. The main idea was to use the customized pattern in furniture manufacturing and design.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: To create a simple yet functional writing desk with discreet storage places that wouldn't obstruct the harmonious flow of the decorative pattern.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: I want to find a company that will produce and market this product on license worldwide.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It was my first own project. I did it for a free time, so it took about year from idea, sketches to manufactured real project. Now I create everything faster.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: I wanted to use that pattern in design because I like it very much. This project was from my inspiration and I created it exactly as I wanted.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: I'm open for companies who could produce and market my writing desk.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The main pattern which I used is called Herringbone. That is why I gave name for the writing desk.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Paper, pencil, 3d program, software for drawing technical drawings.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The most unique aspect is pattern which surrounds the writing desk and its functionality. Behind the pattern there is a hidden drawer with push-to-open system.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Design I created by myself, but some decisions I had to make with colleague for manufacturing.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: It was a big role. Because I had to think how to frame pattern between two thin stripes and make it stable at the same time. Also it was also a question how to make Herringbone pattern sharp, because CNC makes a 3 millimeters radius inside the ornament.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: How to make it look aesthetics and at the same time functional.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I was looking for competitions to submit my project worldwide.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: After that I created other writing desks which I like too much easier.
