DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: We always start a project rethinking materials, concepts and processes. Especially in this case, this was our guideline to create the Loop Mirror - a product composed only by three simple complementary pieces: a loop steel frame that holds together the mirror glass and a concrete base only by a pin. Making up this particular constructive system naturally led us to come up with the clean and delicate design we were looking for, with no glue, screws or weldings on its composition.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It is been almost an year of development, since the beginning of its conception until it is ready for sales.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The name Loop refers to the way all the set is structured: by a steel frame loop that holds all the three materials together in one single piece.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The fact that the product is self structured, with no need of any other material such as glue, nails or weldings is pretty much what makes Loop Mirror particularly especial. Mostly because it’s accurate mounting system allows its aesthetical to be delicate and clean, reflecting the simplicity of the way it was assembled: every part and every shape’s design has a purpose and an essential function to make the set work.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: We always work and learn with our specialists from the many fields of production processes. Each one has their particular knowledge and contribute a lot with all parts of de designs production. We consider essential to have a good team involved in our products development, once having different skills and points of view makes it much more likely to achieve a successful final product.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Technology has a strong presence in our designs in general. In the Loop Mirror, it was used as an essential tool to make the whole structure system have the required accuracy. The concrete base, the most complex piece to be developed, was first produced with CNC technology to be used as a matrix for the polyurethane mold. The same technology was used for the steel frame loop that needed to precisely fit the pieces.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The whole mirror structure was challenging as we had three different materials with its own properties working together aesthetically and structurally. The concrete mold was the biggest challenge of the project, once it is quite a limited tool to be used for non-symmetrical and complex objects, as we needed. Besides that, each part of the set had to fit precisely into each other, which generated a sequence of many trials until we get to the best result.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: We always learn a lot during the prototyping step of the project. It is very common that everything goes according to expectations and seems to easily work during the designing part but it all suddenly change when we start bringing it out of the paper. Things going wrong help us to learn how to deal with adverse situations, to understand more about techniques and materials and mainly to exercise our creativity and search for new solutions.
