DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: The main goal of the exhibition stand was to deliver the vision of ZKW Group about the role of light in the future of automotive. The core idea was to let pure light tell its won story, as intelligent and as immersive as possible.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: To keep it simple and raw. The main goal was to stick to the core messages in a stricking way and find ways transport all information with pure light.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: That really depends on our client ZKW Group.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: The overall process took about 6 months, from initial research and ideation with our client over several approaches and moodboards till the final concept and design.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: Initially we were driven solely by inspiration.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: Responsive Spaces is a company which focusses on technology enabled storytelling. Therefore this project is exactly what we try to do all the time.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: No really. Of course there are a lot of digital installation in space out there and a lot of them are light installations as well. But there is not one or two installations that could be singled out as special influence.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Visitors from the press at the IAA in Frankfurt as well as business partners and clients of ZKW Group.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: To our knowledge there has never been a 24 squaremeter lightspace, which was build with light panels for rock concerts, which were then utilized for interactive and immersive storytelling.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: It is what it is. An interactive lightspace ;-)
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: 3D authoring tools and vvvv as well as Photoshop.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The combination of light technology, interactivity and storytellling.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Of course we worked with an excellent exhibition stand build in Syma Austria, who enabled us to build this whole lightspace the way we did. For the 3D animations on the LED wall we worked together with the great boys from LWZ, a design studio based in Vienna.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: It plays a huge role of course, because without technology, a lot of technology, we would not have been able to build this interactive lightspace.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Our research was directed at the future role of light in autonomous driving.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: That´s easy to answer. The whole realisation of the project was a challenge, since it was never done this way and we "misused" some technology, like laser range sensors that are usually used for industrial surveillance or light panels that a designed for rock concerts.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: We thought the special character of our project would find some recognition.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: Since we learn and evolve with every project that we do, we also learned a lot about certain technologies in this project as well.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: We really enjoyed the whole journey of this project and the feedback that we and our client got at the IAA was the best reward one can imagine.
