DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: This project is not only popular with my client but let me return to innocence and give me a chance to redefine the nature of life and design.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: Change attitude, Change life
There is no specific design language and style, as this won’t reduce the designer's creativity, strangle innovation and will explore more opportunities. We insist on creating a variety of ideas, and people may feel full of vocabularies of spatial tension. Our design philosophy is to hope that a piece of work is unique, and each piece should be able to reflect issues of geography, cultural history, nature, climate, society, human and sustainability.
I want to share the progress and experience of this project. Normally this design would be loved by young groups, but unexpectedly this project was requested from a 70-year-old elder. We provide a lot behavior patterns and solutions of presenting space in the progress to him. The plan of this project determined successfully, but we stuggled on the form how presenting the space for a while . We keep trying the draft for his approval again and again, but it just not worked.
Until he spoke one thing in the interview, so I change every concept and started to work on this present of the space.
This is what he said: I experienced a lot things in my life. What else can make me excited? Life starts at 70 years old. If this case can present the feeling of future living that would be the most exciting thing I expected.
This thing reminds me the mandarin author, Sanmao. This is her poetry: If I had a next life, I would be a tree. Standing to eternity without sorrow or happiness. Half of my body in the earth peacefully. Half of my body in the wind joyfully. This poetry presents a concept of eternity.
This poetry touched my heart. As I work in the space and design field for decades in my career. I lost the passion of the beginning gradually. The space tells us about eternity, circulation and continuity with human being, but not just for presenting only.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: There’s another old saying in Chinese said: “Unity of Universe and Human.” Universe is a great world; human is a small world. The nature of Human and universe is connected, so everything and human beings should follow the rule of nature to reach concordance between human beings and nature. Isn’t the core value of the space?
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: Toyo Ito,Rem Koolhaas,Jean Nouvel
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: this project was requested from a 70-year-old elder.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: 《Images of Life extension》Space is like life,Never Stop
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Alias,Rhino,Grasshopper,Vray,3D Max,Photoshop
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: Template production, on-site assembly
The model was built by recast prefabricated panel in the factory which increase the accuracy of working. Other representations of the space were present by changing of light and furniture.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: This project we partition the function as a block, the formation of space part of the components, such as the proportion of space occupied by public areas as a database of one unit of the modulus, and other regions and so on, from the data into the number of graphical data, Affect the size and shape of the graphics, overlapping with each other for the use of flexible, the organization of the space is one by one forming, arrange all the graphics growth, with the same way to complete the design and space arrangements.
So we try to use a rule, order, logic, and a method to connect all identities of the spaces. We use the traffic flow as a guidance to change the space using paten. This is kind of the relationship between skin and bone. Bone connect with skin. Traffic flow connect with identities of space. We use simple quadrilateral geometric figure to represent the identities of every spaces. Traffic flow represent the behavior pattern. We use computer to generate hundreds of shapes and forms. Through the using functions to capture the best representation of the space.
All of the ceiling, floor, wall, pillar, bar, sofa are connected. Everything become eternity and endless pulses as time goes by. The space was cover by massive of skin, so the sunlight become less. This is because we use the largest window opening area, analyze the data of sunlight and calculated by computer to get the best changing of lighting field. The amount of sunlight defines the shape of the skin in this project.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: Through the parametric model to create a new design language, using the same form and logic will gather all the information together, so the parameterization, construction is not only a tool for the performance method, but another design thinking, design thinking contact designers and space of the bridge, and affect the future design thinking mode.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: Verify the maturity of the work.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: Living space must meet user needs and expand the continuity of living space. Through this bold experimental works, exploring all aspects of the residential function can be and is comprised adhere to an attitude of seeking a different lifestyle, which is what we purse.
