DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: The land of the ancient Shu Kingdom (i.e., today’s Sichuan Province) is a land abundant of natural and cultural resources. The Tang poet Du Fu who lived in Chengdu, the capital of Shu Kingdom, once stated: The general has died before battling on the ground, and such a situation often makes a hero cry helplessly. He also poetized that a good rain knows its own season, and look at the morning red tears, tiers of tiers of blossoms pile up in the bustling capital. Chengdu contains the depth of history, the openness of kingdom, the subtlety of poetry, and the sonority of Sichuan opera. With a cup of tea, telling a folk tale, the world and cosmos are included in a special house, designed by the Shenzhen Creative-Space Design, namely the model house in the Vanke New Park residential compound.
Here, the long history and cultural context is merged with the comfortable and elegant life, deducing an ideal painting scroll of Chinese contemporary residential life.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: We focus on the following: how to transform the traditional life style of Chinese Siheyuan into the modern villa space in order to blend them together, and how to solve the problem of traffic and communication inconvenience caused by the multi-story in the villa. Through the setting of two atrium spaces, these problems are solved efficiently, and at the same time, we create a modern house with unique Oriental cultural.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: From February to September 2016, it took me six months to design.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: At the beginning of 2016, we were commissioned from Chengdu Vanke Chuanfu Property Co., Ltd to design this villa model home where three-generation can live together. In this design, we paid attention to the relation between the contemporary life, the Sichuan local culture and Chinese traditional view.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: This project is a Villa model home for Chengdu Vanke New Park, a real estate located in Sichuan Province.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: In this project, the problems we faced were the urgency of the construction deadline and the difficulty of the cross-construction of the soft and hard textured decorations. With a tight budget, attempting to realize the artistic and regional cultural characteristics of the space was the primary consideration for the designer. Due to the reality that local construction teams cannot meet the design requirements, the design process was forced to simplify some specific details, and finally found a way to offset the quality loss through soft-textured decorations.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: Oriental culture and aesthetics are increasingly favored by more and more people in the world. It is our mission and responsibility to integrate the traditional culture and modern lifestyles. Through such works, I also hope to deliver more oriental aesthetic ideas and life style concepts, in order to help people better understand the Chinese culture.
