DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: Firstly, the inspiration came as a technical challenge of how to satisfy visitors needs on location and local information, as well as local citizens on services and cultural, keeping a fun engagement from users. Second, how to do it through a hyperbolic interface and stimulate the sense of belonging by the users. Last, but not least, how to merge the lessons learned from two main digital media (TV and Mobile) and public signage, in order to create an design proposal fitting on the living rooms of cities.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: Design oriented to the new paradigm of public screens: 100% Multi-Touch and Multi-user interface for Full HD Screens without external buttons, such as hard keyboard. Enticing people to interact with a large screen for public urban places through the aesthetic of the equipment, design of advanced features (eg., icons, color pallet, layers triggering emotional reaction) and error probability reduction on user interaction. Participatory design practice with users, media professionals, marketers and people from several cultural and technical backgrounds.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: Spread the concept into the heart of the main cities in the world and be the citizens best friend.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: This was a year project from sketch board to street usage, but we see it as always improving project with regular monthly updates ever since.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: It was an in-house project regarding the company vision for the smart city future environment.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: Our design has been deploy and it's daily used by thousands of people every day in several cities already.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: It was an in-house project regarding the company vision for the smart city future environment.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: Mainly the street signage and public transportation signs.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: People who visit and live in the city.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: The overall perspective about public screens and the options out we made for the user experience simplicity optimisation.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: I said before it was an in-house project regarding the company vision for the smart city future environment. So the name comes from Total Outdoor Media Interactive.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Paper, pen, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchApp, PrincipleApp, Zeplin. But the two most important were really paper and pen. We had lots of internal meetings brainstorming grids and possibilities before we go to screen. User testing was a big part so the camera recording and screen recorder was a big plus in the process too.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: It fills a space were there were not a design reference. In therms of big standards it was really a no mans land. We believe we ere the first big kid on the block regarding the goal of building a street/urban interactive city friendly public screen.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Yes we've worked with several people from different areas of knowledge like psychology, urbanism, architecture, public administration, industrial engineering, ergonomy, ONGs regarding accessibility future proof evolution among others.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: It had take an enormous role because had made possible some particular vision we have sketched. To became both faces glass device was crucial in our design vision to make it as sexy touchable as possible. So that was for sure a big plus from the engineering team.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: We had from the first day deploy reports in a real-time basis, so we use that every-time in our updates roadmap. We are always listening to our users and his activity in our networked devices.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The biggest challenging was to downsize as much as possible the learning curve with the TOMI services in order to win the user attention and full-fill is needs as quick as possible.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: We were really into in the internationalisation process so it was the right move in the right time.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: I strongly understood the importance of team work and to be able to do the bridge between the different stakeholders of the process.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
: Once more we'd like to thanks all the stakeholders and people that drove this to reality.
