DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: Recovery of architectural waste is the big problem of environment protection. Waste architectural waste generally adopts the handling method of burying and piling, especially in developing countries. Designing and manufacturing public facilities whose materials are regenerative concrete can not only save the transportation expense of aggregate, but also save the land expenses occupied by architectural waste. The colorful concrete can enrich the demonstrativeness of concrete furniture.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: This works takes the concrete waste as the aggregate of precast concrete to make concrete outdoor facilities, which enables new urban furniture to have ecological features. It borrows the tenon-mortise structure from traditional Chinese architecture to embody its connection with the traditional culture. It is convenient in making and various in combination mode; it is also characteristic of traditional Chinese construction element and is suitable for display of modern architectural.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: Make deeper and systematic research on the structure of concrete furniture, analyze and summarize structure, frame structure of traditional concrete, forms of overall assembly structure as well as frame connection method. Make improvement for this design.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: all possible
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: I already made material object and planned to continue research on this project.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: First of all, it is because the increasing scarcities of global resources, sustainable products have become main research direction, secondly it is because my strong personal interests in public facility design.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: Yes, there is. Mr. Huang has provided great assistance in my design, seniors in the team also provided precious comments.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Real estate agent, urban planning and designing institution, government
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: This design mainly makes research on the rational use of concrete with characteristics of durability, plasticity and environmental protection; makes design innovation, makes improvement in traditional wooden tenon-mortise structure and tries to make material and color experiments.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: Name based on its characteristics.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Pro/E, cutting tools, measuring tools and concrete mixing tools
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: Change filling material and traditional color of public facilities, adopt traditional Chinese tenon-mortise structure, and make rational use of waste resources and present various kind of combination.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: They are mainly some professional woodworker and concrete craftsmen.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: In the preparation process, make continuous discussions with mold master and casting mold master on preparation process and method and perform continuous modifications and innovations.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: Application of color in concrete
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The two difficult points lie in both the composition proportion of regenerative concrete and the color control of colorful pigment in concrete. We have attempted many types and failed for many times. Finally we found appropriate proportion and mastered colour matching techniques.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I am very confident in my works and hope my efforts can be recognized through attending this competition.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: In the preparation process, make continuous discussions with mold master and casting mold master on preparation process and method, in the premise of ensuring effects, I tried my best to get the best result within my ability through continuous modifications and innovations.
