DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: I base my ideas on graphic design, regardless of the specific design category I’m dealing with.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: Sen is a 6 piece collection of steel furniture that turns 2D lines into 3D forms. Each piece including “kagome stool” has been created with lines that minimize excess to express both form and functionality in a range of applications, inspired by unique sources such as traditional Japanese craft and patterns. In creating Kagome Stool, I thought about the function of sitting and how to assemble simple forms like right angled triangles, and based the design on the traditional Japanese kagome moyou pattern. The traditional kagome moyou pattern is an example of reaffirming creation from functionality.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: I am a designer with background in graphic design, so I wanted to created funiture just like a simple perspective drawing on paper. Also, I wanted to create furniture which is inspired by something Japanese.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: Kagome stool is being produced by myself.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: I wanted to creates phisical product by applying methodologies that I acquired through my expertise in graphic design.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: When viewed from above forms the traditional Japanese craft pattern kagome moyou. So that the name for this design is "Kagome".
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: The stool is created by only lines, but I have given Kagome stool a functional role of product, as well as a role of planar composition and communication of graphic.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: The person at a wire works in Tokyo.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: I gave simple shapes a function of sitting.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The major role of graphic design is to communicate something to people, and product design is to be used by people. Also, graphic is dealt in a limited plane, in an imaginary or unreal world. On the other hand, product is a solid object in a real world. While such differences cross over with one another, respective results are achieved; I feel the challenge and the fun in such design process.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I wanted people to know my design and concept.
