DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: This design comes from a simple Möbius strip (topological figure non-orientable) shaped in such a way as to evoke the figure of a cobra. It's made of carbon fiber, with LED lighting (dimmable), placed in a way to project on a wall or around the looming shadow of a cobra head. The challenge was to create an iconic sign, with emotional value, using the Möbius strip. The use of carbon fiber is particularly suitable to express the formal movement. The choice of placing the light source in the base shows ironically the artistic value of the object, leaning on it as on a pedestal and star in generating the play of light and shadows.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: The prototype of 'Cobra' was realized as part of the collection 'interioritratti' (www.interioritratti.com), the brand I created to start my projects artistically inspired… In this case the object, as well as creates a play of light and shadows, is expressed ironically in an artistic sense, because - as I said before - the choice of placing the light source just in the base is a joke that shows the artistic value of the object. In short, the cobra puts himself on a pedestal and its function is purely aesthetic, because of its shape and of the shadow that occurs when illuminated from below. As I think this design fits well to serial production I plan to sell or lease the production rights.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: With its essential design I think Cobra is suitable for private or public location, especially hotels.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: The strip is made of carbon fiber that requires a processing complex, with finishing operations by hand. It has has been carefully shaped by Michele Garofalo, formed in Pininfarina, who lives and works now in Cagliari. To produce the mold have been made various tests. The base is intentionally geometrical, with a recess to accommodate the adjustable LED light source.
