DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
RYD : The R65 Hybrid Trawler was inspired by the balance of nature and the integration of modern hybrid technology. Its strong aluminum hull offers durability and efficiency, while the fluid lines of the exterior reflect the rhythm of ocean waves. The color palette, featuring deep blues and whites, was selected to enhance the connection with the sea. The interior was designed to deliver a luxurious and spacious experience for long journeys.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
RYD : Our main focus was to create a vessel that combines strength, efficiency, and sustainability. The intelligently optimized layout ensures maximum space utilization, while panoramic windows bring in natural light and connect the interiors with the sea. The flybridge and aft deck offer social areas designed for comfort and functionality. Every detail was designed with livability, functionality, and elegance in mind.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
RYD : We plan to bring the R65 Hybrid Trawler into production and position it as a reference model for sustainable maritime solutions. We also intend to use the same platform to develop new models with different sizes and configurations.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
RYD : The design and development process for the R65 began in 2023 in Tuzla, Istanbul. The project included phases of concept creation, 3D modeling, performance optimization, and visual presentation, spanning several months.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
RYD : This was a commissioned project for a French client. It was specifically developed to meet their requirements for long-range cruising, liveability, and hybrid propulsion systems.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
RYD : We are currently in discussions with shipyards for the production of this model. Our aim is to realize the project under our direct design supervision in collaboration with reliable builders.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
RYD : We observed a growing demand for long-range, liveable, and eco-conscious trawlers. The R65 Hybrid Trawler was developed to meet this demand and to offer an environmentally responsible solution in the trawler segment.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
RYD : While we are always inspired by successful designs and professionals in the marine industry, the R65 Hybrid Trawler was primarily shaped by user feedback, industry insights, and our client’s unique needs.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
RYD : The R65 Hybrid Trawler is designed for sea lovers who seek long-distance cruising, comfort, sustainability, and a high level of customization.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
RYD : The hybrid propulsion system allows for 20–40% fuel savings, while the aluminum hull provides excellent durability and weight efficiency.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
RYD : "R65" reflects the identity of Ray Yacht Design’s trawler series. "R" represents the series name, while "65" refers to the vessel’s length in feet.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
RYD : The R65 combines sustainability with liveability. Its hybrid propulsion, efficient aluminum hull, and luxurious interiors with panoramic views make it stand out from traditional trawlers.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
RYD : Technology is at the core of this design. The hybrid propulsion system, advanced control systems, and onboard smart features make the R65 not only modern but also efficient and sustainable.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
RYD : Yes, we conducted extensive research on hybrid propulsion technologies, aluminum hull dynamics, fuel efficiency, and long-range cruising behavior. All design decisions were backed by performance and user studies.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
RYD : One major challenge was optimizing the aluminum hull for both weight and durability. Integrating the hybrid propulsion system and ensuring high-quality materials for marine conditions were also significant technical challenges.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
RYD : We believed that the R65 successfully represented the fusion of sustainability, innovation, and aesthetics. A’ Design Award was a great platform to present it on a global stage.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
RYD : We deepened our knowledge of hybrid propulsion systems, aluminum structural design, and interior-exterior spatial harmony. It also enhanced our ability to deliver client-specific, eco-friendly solutions.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
RYD : The R65 Hybrid Trawler is not just a yacht—it's a statement about the future of responsible, luxurious cruising. It blends innovation with tradition and offers a new perspective on long-range marine travel.
