DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SJ : We realized the strong need for a lighting fixture that could appear exactly where it was needed without spreading light excessively or causing glare. Since the product was intended for outdoor use, waterproofing and durability were also key factors.
We needed a light that could illuminate its surroundings in 360 degrees using soft, glare-free spot lighting, and that wouldn’t create new challenges for users during installation or usage.
So, we envisioned a light with a neck that could rotate freely and offer infinite lighting positions and that’s how we arrived at the concept of Infinito. The idea of infinity not only guided the functionality, but also inspired the form, which ultimately completed our design vision.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SJ : Our focus was to develop a neck with smooth, 360 degree infinite rotation completely waterproof, free of glare, and, despite its technical complexity, both minimal and user friendly in design.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SJ : This is such an exciting question it really stirs up a lot of emotion for me.
For upcoming awards, we’re working on lighting products that go beyond illumination itself.
Personally, I’ve chosen not to focus exclusively on lighting anymore. I'm also exploring or actively preparing to work on projects in other fields such as drones, robotics, architecture, jewelry design, and even automotive design either independently or in collaboration with other teammates.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SJ : The project took approximately 4 to 6 months from initial concept to final product, including ideation, design challenges, form development, and technical execution.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SJ : We had initially begun ideating for a commissioned project focused on courtyard lighting.
That early work led to a basic but successful product, which we called Project 7.
From there, our ambition grew we envisioned something far more advanced: a light capable of 360 degree illumination, waterproof, technically sophisticated, visually minimal, and complete.
That’s when we said, Why not? And Infinito was born.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SJ : Regarding this matter, I prefer to discuss it at the appropriate time.
Currently, we plan to produce this product ourselves, but we are open to considering and discussing other proposals as well.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
SJ : My strong passion for tackling challenges, ideating ways to improve products, and creating innovative solutions was the main driver behind designing this particular work. Specifically, I wanted to solve the problem of providing flexible, 360 degree illumination without glare, combined with waterproof durability and minimalistic aesthetics. The challenge of balancing technical performance with user friendly design inspired me to develop this unique lighting solution.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SJ : Mr.Mohammad Mostafa Sharifianmehr has been with me throughout all stages of this design process, contributing significantly and positively. Together, we created this unique project.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
SJ : Our target customers were those who own or manage outdoor spaces such as villas, hotels, residential complexes, and apartment buildings essentially anywhere that requires fully adaptive, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing lighting solutions.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SJ : Infinito stands out with its infinite 360 degree rotation, glare free lighting, and durable waterproof design. It combines minimalist aesthetics with advanced technology to deliver flexible, user friendly illumination ideal for any outdoor space.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SJ : The name Infinito is derived from the core philosophy and vision of the product itself offering infinite lighting possibilities through its 360 degree rotational design.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SJ : Our workflow involved using SolidWorks, KeyShot, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Premiere.
At the very beginning of the process, we started with just paper and a pen, complemented by some work in Procreate.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SJ : Beyond all the tools and features I mentioned, what truly fascinates me about the Infinito light is how its complexity is seamlessly embedded within a simple appearance. For me, this simplicity brings a sense of calm to the user as if the light is saying, Let me handle the challenges; you just enjoy the experience.
Moreover, the fact that this philosophy is reflected in both the name and form of the Infinito light is simply outstanding.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SJ : This project was carried out by myself and Mr. Mohammad Mostafa Sharifianmehr. All stylistic, technical, and design skills, as well as our research, studies, and experiences, were brought together by us.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SJ : In this project, technology played a fundamental role in making the product both high performing and sustainable.
By using LED chips from some of the world’s most reputable manufacturers and employing 6063 grade aluminum, we were able to create a fully sustainable lighting solution.
The development of the rotating neck which had to transmit power while allowing smooth motion required its own specific technical approach.
Additionally, during the design process, coding and simulation tools helped us overcome challenges more efficiently and refine the product with greater precision.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SJ : Our research focused on material science and the physical behavior of lighting components.
We also studied how water interacts with the fixture, as well as how the light performs in different environmental conditions both of which were essential aspects of our development process.
Additionally, optimizing the manufacturing process to make production faster and more efficient was another major challenge that required extensive research and problem solving.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SJ : Our major challenges began with engineering a neck mechanism that would allow one cylinder to rotate infinitely while mounted on another.
Ensuring full waterproofing while maintaining that rotational freedom was a significant technical hurdle.
Another key challenge was achieving smooth rotation between two tightly connected cylinders with minimal spacing.
Finally, we had to ensure the product could be manufactured efficiently, without issues, and in a fully sustainable manner.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SJ : In early 2024, we became more familiar with the international design awards landscape, especially those we had known from before.
We decided to submit our project Modulo in which I was a team member under the leadership of Mr. Mohammad Mostafa Sharifianmehr and it was honored with a Bronze A'Design award.
After this success, we were encouraged to share other ideas that we personally believed in, and to bring them into global competitions as a way to introduce them to the world.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SJ : Throughout this journey, I’ve learned that every challenge and problem in design is actually a gift for us as designers.
They give us the opportunity not only to grow and evolve personally, but also to contribute to solving real-world issues.
In many cases, these challenges represent untapped opportunities things that few have noticed or dared to tackle.
And I believe this is where the true turning point of a designer’s success lies.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SJ : Design doesn’t just create, it shapes the story of the future, carving a new timeline for the world.
