DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
DI : To create a product that balances aesthetics and practicality. The inspiration for using color gradient fabrics comes from the paintings of Van Gogh.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
DI : The traditional circular steering wheel allows both hands to move freely, it‘s easy to get the hands mixed up after turning and returning, while a half-spoke steering wheel can cause the other hand to grab the air when turning and turning back, so we aimed to build a steering wheel that avoids both problems.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
DI : Develop more car models from this.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
DI : one month
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
DI : I decided to pursuit an inspiration.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
DI : We Agiling has already launched the production of Cyber Yoke, but we also plan to sell or lease the production rights.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
DI : I originally worked in the automotive industry.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
DI : Yes, Van Gogh
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
DI : Tesla owners
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
DI : Compare with half-spoke steering wheels: 1. Refuse "grab the air"; 2. Reduce "block screen"; 3. Refuse "block the leg".
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
DI : It's not Cyber, nor Yoke,
It's CyberYoke.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
DI : Using NX to create design models and then using resin 3D printing to verify feasibility.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
DI : Create a steering wheel that combines the advantages of circular steering wheel and half-spoke steering wheel. The unique wheel rim shape of Oval Rectangle highlights a strong sense of technology and futurism, and the design of different materials and colors on the double rings of inner and outer reflects a special sense of layering. The application of particular material-color gradient fabrics provides more personalized choices.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
DI : Developed in Collaboration with CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences).
Designed by Agiling, model made by CAS.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
DI : The development of the manufacturing process is more difficult than the design. The entire product development took one year. The foaming mold of the steering wheel body was modified three times, and the color gradient fabric was modified three times.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
DI : The surface material was hand-wrapped, and it was difficult to maintain the surface flatness. Quality control was the key.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
DI : Using resin 3D printing to verify feasibility, the use of resin materials results in significant dimensional errors, leading to longer mold modification times during the product trial production phase.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
DI : Just take a chance
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
DI : For the development of color gradient fabrics, due to the high requirement for fabric extensibility for surface covering, the initial color displayed by the fabric is darker. Adjusting the fabric texture scheme can effectively reduce the color depth.
