DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
ZH : The Dunhuang series is a combination of cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage techniques. The design of the work is inspired by Cave 320 of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
ZH : The Dunhuang series mainly presents the image of the most famous flying apsaras in Cave 320 of Mogao Grottoes, which is known as the most beautiful “Black Flying Apsaras."
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
ZH : A' Design's Gold Award is the first major international competition award for the Liang Xing brand. This is a great start for our brand and is far-reaching for brand promotion.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
ZH : The design conceptualization took one month, and it took nearly six months from conceptualization to product implementation.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
ZH : In China's cultural product market, there are not many works that can capture both visual culture and design. We want to make successful products that transform cultural heritage.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
ZH : The Dunhuang series is produced by ourselves.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
ZH : We were curious about 3D printed jewelry, and we wondered how well this new technology would integrate with traditional craftsmanship.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
ZH : Not at the moment, our products are completely original.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
ZH : Our target customers are people who have a need for design products as well as purchasing power.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
ZH : Our designs are inspired by China's cultural heritage and ancient art objects.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
ZH : Our naming strategy is straightforward, and in order to promote Chinese culture through the design of our products, we will use simple and straightforward naming methods.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
ZH : We used 3D modeling and 3D printing technology.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
ZH : The craftsmanship of our products has a tendency to adopt the handmade techniques of Beijing. The Dunhuang series includes a technique called filigree inlay.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
ZH : The styling of the Dunhuang series was done by me and the 3D modeling of the product was done by my partner.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
ZH : Technology is important in the Dunhuang collection, as the traditional production process does not allow for delicate and complex three-dimensional structures. In particular, the curves of the ribbons that restore the image of the flying apsaras can only be accomplished through 3D printing technology at this time.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
ZH : The design is inspired by academic research, not data.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
ZH : The combination of 3D printed modeling and traditional craftsmanship in design is a major difficulty. This is because most of the handmade techniques cannot make complex shapes in a very fast time.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
ZH : We want to make the beautiful Chinese culture and handicrafts active on the world stage. The brand's original intention from the very beginning was to deliver Chinese art to the sea.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
ZH : After receiving the gold A'Design award, I realized that the international design field is paying attention to Chinese culture and art. It was also the first major award I received in my career.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
ZH : No more. Expect me to win another A'Design award in the future.
