DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
YC : This project is converted from a 70-year-old storage room. These loess bricks have a history of 70 years and are also the main building materials preserved in this case. Carefully keep the loess bricks cut from the hole, and designed the bar counter facade, also that countertop use solid wood to increase the warmth of the space. The designer hope to preserve the traces of times from the exterior to the interior.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
YC : The loess brick is a special material for this case. Because it is difficult to make again, I want to use this material to represent the idea of inheritance from ancient times to the present.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
YC : I hope that in the future, there will be more traditional craftsmanship and materials, which can be preserved through design.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
YC : The concept took about a month to design.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
YC : For buildings with old structures, most of them tend to be demolished and rebuilt when the design is changed. In order to preserve the characteristic buildings, there was design inspiration.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
YC : This design project is a private commission, so it will not be produced or leased out.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
YC : This design case is the place where the client has lived since childhood, and inspired to change the design of this building for passing on to the next generation.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
YC : The EASE INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD team learned to design from the perspective of caring for the land and being environmentally friendly, allowing nature to return to the city and building a suitable residence.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
YC : The main target is local residents and tourists.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
YC : Because it is located in the black tea production area and is an old house with a history of 70 years, the overall environment and design style are relatively rare in urban areas.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
YC : The crops of the sun and the moon are the crystallization of farmers, and it is also the story of two classmates, one urban child and the other country child. The ideal of rural children is to do something for their hometown, while urban children want to create different fields, so Sun Moon Crop was born.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
YC : Most of them use hand drawing, AutoCad and SketchUp.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
YC : Retain existing roof tiles and loess bricks and integrated with modern materials.
Parts of the solid wood table is spliced with the existing wooden beams to make the new one.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
YC : The structural modification project of this case was completed in cooperation with MuYue Construction Co., Ltd., together with a professional team of metal and clay works.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
YC : Structural support is the main technical axis of this case, without which the design cannot be achieved.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
YC : Based on traditional building materials, it is integrated into the local tea culture.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
YC : Because the structure of the building was old and weak, the structure was reinforced with H-beams when a hole was dug in the wall between the two warehouses.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
YC : Fujian-style old houses are a distinctive form of architecture in Taiwan. We hope to use this design to share Taiwanese-style architecture with the world.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
YC : It is a rare design experience to keep the old architectural features and optimize the design. I hope that I can keep my original intention in the future design journey.
