DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
KK : The inspiration for the curesight product started from a personal experience when one of my kids needed to treat the lazy eye condition with the eye patch solution, I learned from this experience about the discomfort of wearing the eye patch for a few hours every day and especially how embarrassing it is from the social point of view. The inspiration for the styling design came from the tech gadgets that kids love to use and play with, to provide a slick and modern design to a medical device product type, the front aluminum bezel, and the back swallowtail gives the product a clean gadget look.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
KK : My focus was to achieve a design that would make children want to approach and interact with the device even without knowing its function.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
KK : The client for this design is a medical device startup, they are working hard to finalize all of the regulatory approvals and to start marketing this solution worldwide
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
KK : The design process from concept to detailed design took about two months, where we started with some concept designs to evaluate the usability, aesthetics, and technology and followed with the second phase of the final concept design and followed with the detailed design and final dimensions, materials, finishes, and more.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
KK : I had complete freedom of action to explore and search for unique inspirations and design for the product in the context of the target audience and user experience
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
KK : This design was ordered by a startup company in the field of healthcare solutions
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
KK : I decided to accept this design project because of the fact that this is a product that solves a big problem, especially for youngsters, and also will have a meaningful social impact
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
KK : I'm the only designer who worked on this design
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
KK : The customer for this design is the company NovaSight, a medical solutions company focusing in solving eyesight problems with eye-tracking and ai technologies
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
KK : I designed a medical device product type using design elements from the hi tech gadgets and gaming design styling
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
KK : The client gave the name for this design
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
KK : Besides hand sketches usually, I'm using the Solidworks cad software for design and rendering and later for accurate detailed design and for, 3d printing, and some other graphic tools
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
KK : The most unique aspect of this design is the front side outline that combines a rectangular shape with trapezoid shape at the bottom, this design element repeated at the back cover and in the supporting leg
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
KK : Yes, I worked with the NovaSight engineering team, including electrical and biomechanical engineers
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
KK : This product is a technological solution intended to replace the current analog solution of the eye patch and as such technology is playing a major role in this design, CAD software, 3D printing, Mechanical and optical simulations, and more
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
KK : NovaSight company conducted clinical research to evaluate the technological capabilities and to collect data regarding the usability needs and preferences, I used the collected data to define the user experience and ergonomy spec first, and from here, the aesthetic design emerged
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
KK : We started the design phase with a kit of technological components to implement into the product encasing design; in front of that, we had a spec of usability and ergonomic needs
the product composition and size need to meet the usability and ergonomic needs, so we have a conflict
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
KK : We received fantastic feedback regarding the product's capabilities and design. It has the fundamental characteristics to be considered a disrupting innovation, like solving a significant problem, cutting edge technology usage, creating positive social impact, and improving the quality of life. And with this in mind, I was sure we had a great chance to win some international design competitions.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
KK : Every project is a new challenge, a chance to improve and polish my design capabilities and meet new collaboration partners.
