DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
WRP : the design of XANA OS is based on several mobile operating systems that I have used before (if I may mention the brands, let's say Windows Phone, Samsung One UI, and iOS). According to my personal experience and analysis, several of the operating systems above have advantages and uniqueness. Each of these makes them loved by their users. I don't know why I was inspired and encouraged to create a mobile OS design inspired by the three OS above into a new mobile OS concept by taking the existing advantages of these three.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
WRP : My focus in making this project is fairly simple, namely designing a mobile operating system concept that is unique and fresh, which is not yet available on the market. also what I want to achieve through my design is to maximize recognition and exposure both from the design side itself and personally as a designer so that it can reach more parties as a selling point for me.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
WRP : My future plans for this design are to continue to develop it better as time goes by, and there is also the possibility that I will sell this design exclusively to a party who is interested with my design.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
WRP : This project started in November 2020 and was completed in February 2021 (Phase I). At that time I felt like I wanted to nominate it straight away. Still, after I thought about it, it didn't matter if the nomination was delayed as long as the development of this project was ongoing to improve the quality of the project itself until it was delayed around 2 years and continued again in early 2024 to improve the design before this year's nomination period deadline closed.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
WRP : My design is currently still a concept and has not been used or realized. However, if in the future there is a company that is interested in my design or collaborates with me to create a design like the one above, then I am ready to collaborate with them or sell to them.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
WRP : My encouragement is that I see the development of mobile operating systems is currently very fast, but on average the existing designs more or less follow each other and look monotonous until finally, the urge arises for me to experiment to create a design that is unique and also fresh.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
WRP : I made this design independently.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
WRP : because it is still a concept, the target could be companies operating in the field of mobile technology or IT companies. If the design is realized then the target customer is almost all groups of people.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
WRP : What differentiates this concept from similar concepts is that the UX design that I created for the navigation completely uses a swipe gesture, which means basic functions such as a control to go back, go to the home screen, see the task screen, etc. done by sweeping the edge of the screen. why? because this can make the existing navigation process more seamless, sophisticated, and easier. therefore also pay attention to my design does not have a back button in it.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
WRP : for this, honestly, I give the name of this design XANA to sound cool and different, there is no special meaning to it.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
WRP : I used Figma software to design the UI and UX parts. to advance prototyping I use Protopie.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
WRP : The unique aspect of this design lies on the navigation section where navigation such as back to the previous screen, back to the home screen, viewing the tasks screen, etc. are completely done by swipe gesture. why? it simple. because this can make the appearance of the UI which becomes more minimalist but also makes the UX more seamless, sophisticated, and easier. Imagine, if all this time the layout of the back button has always been placed in the top left corner to reach it, this is indeed trivial, but if there is a large device, are our fingers long enough to reach it? Maybe, but it will require more effort for users to reach it. So to make it easier, navigation in XANA OS completely uses a swipe gesture where if the user wants to return to the previous page, for example, this can be done by swiping the corner of the screen. This may make the user have to adapt at first, but it will only take a while for the user to learn until finally the user will discover how easy this kind of navigation is.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
WRP : For this project, I designed it from start to finish independently.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
WRP : The role of technology in creating design concepts is certainly very large and basically, technology is the main container for this kind of interactive UI design concept. especially for the touchscreen technology section.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
WRP : In particular, there are not too many portions or it has to look like complicated research. For the initial idea, I designed it based on the analysis I carried out by observing and looking at reviews about operating system technology to get the right insight for my project. and for the design validation process, I conducted a simple survey to get feedback from potential users and improved it with their feedback.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
WRP : The challenge I faced when designing this concept was how to combine various existing mobile operating system designs (especially the ones I have used) into a concept that is unique and also has its own characteristics. On the other hand, because this concept is quite big, another challenge is how my design must also have a similarity side like a mobile OS in general for users so that users can quickly get to know and adapt to my design concept, which in the end must be able to make it easier for users.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
WRP : I see that of the many mobile technology design concepts in particular, no mobile operating system concept has been included in this competition, let alone those who have worked on it independently even for the design concept.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
WRP : What I can learn from this particular project is how a designer can design a good design concept, which can make it easier for users to use the function of the design. Even though it is still a concept, this is the crucial stage in determining whether the concept is suitable for publication or not.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
WRP : When working on a project, whatever it is, and even if it is still a concept if you have the belief that one day the concept can provide inspiration or even be realized and be useful for many people, then believe in it and work on it wholeheartedly.
