DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
MN : The theme is softness and Lightness like floating in the air. Mau means dancing like floating in Japanese. Some people don’t prefer alcohol perfume as most of them smell too strong in their standard. However, waxed perfume’s soft smell seems more suitable for them.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
MN : Expanding the potential of perfume with waxed perfume. In addition, we focused on how to express the characteristic of waxed perfume, the fragrance spreads softly , in the package.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
MN : It is not commissioned. I thought that by incorporating what I noticed in my life into my design, I could create a connection between my ability and sense and society.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
MN : It is influenced by the Japanese traditional watercolor technique and the delicate craft that I saw in the Washi workshop I visited when I was a student. The rough texture of Japanese paper was also a hint of the design. At that time, I learned about the fact that there are fewer washi craft centers in Japan, and I was wondering if I could make some kind of product.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
MN : Those who have had negative feelings about perfume. People who want to enjoy the fragrance freely.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
MN : This work’s theme is softness and Lightness like floating in the air. Mau means dancing like floating in Japanese.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
MN : A lot of drawing paper, paints, and prototype models made of paper. Of cause I used illustrator too, but there were a lot of physical work. In particular, I wrote many pages of watercolors by hand and then selected the most suitable pattern to product.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
MN : It can use only paper without plastics for package as wax perfume's water content is less than alcohol one.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
MN : As it is a concept design and not commercialized, I wanted a chance to present my idea to the world
