DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
Planmeca : We did extensive research on how users use the product and listened and observed very carefully what were the most common pain points users faced. From this we derived insights that offered easy solutions for the first time users to learn the software and for the experienced users to have more customisation options.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
Planmeca : We wanted it to have clear visual appearance to keep the dentist or nurse focused on the task at hand. Subtle, unobtrusive graphics, familiar conventions and predictable behaviours where favoured over flamboyant style. Style vice we didn’t want to go all flat with the design language and we also wanted it to be easily translatable to other applications as this was the basis and first user interface for the new company wide design system.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
Planmeca : We will keep collecting information of its use and make it even better with every sprint.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
Planmeca : The concept phase took about a year and from there it got revised for multiple times and now after 2,5 years of continuous work we are ready to release the Planmeca Romexis 6.0 version to the market.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
Planmeca : The Romexis software allows capturing, viewing and processing all types of data in the same system – with all 2D and 3D images and CAD/CAM cases in the same database. The software has extensive specialist tools, real-time monitoring possibilities, and unique connectivity with Planmeca equipment, we wanted to make all of the interactions and workflows for these as easy as possible.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
Planmeca : The software is released, and we are selling it through our dealer network throughout the world.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
Planmeca : Work was mainly designed by our lead UI/UX designer Antti Eloheimo, but design is a team effort and everyone in the team contributed to the outcome
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
Planmeca : Mainly for dentistry professionals, but this same software can be used for medical and veterinary purposes also.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
Planmeca : It has superior usability and all-in-one approach where 2D, 3D and CAD/CAM needs are met with single software, all the other competitor have these in specialties in different software’s and overall workflow is not as fast. Romexis is also an open platform that works seamlessly with industry standards.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
Planmeca : Design was done on Sketch app and developed with Java.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
Planmeca : Romexis is the most powerful dental software platform in the world. It offers a rich selection of tools and features for all needs and specialities. Romexis brings together all the equipment at a dental clinic – from CAD/CAM technology to imaging devices and dental units. Seeing all the patient data from one location and the possibility to interact with any of it with just one click sets this design in its own league.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
Planmeca : Design quality of Romexis is based on continuous user experience research that incorporates behavioural, attitudinal, quantitative and qualitative data collection.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
Planmeca : Balancing and prioritizing vastly different user needs in a software that has multiple use cases.
