DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LS : The main idea is to create an iconic visuals for the opera plots which also have an emotional value. I was inspired by the portraits of Malevich and in general constructivistische approach to composition.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LS : I wanted to achieve in a clean and bold graphical way the maximum of visual and emotional impact.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LS : I would like to continue this topic.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LS : Several weeks.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LS : This was a volunteer project as far as I find supporting the culture and constantly searching and introducing a contemporary form to the classical music very important.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LS : I would like to introduce this design to the opera festivals or organizations.
For example I am a big fan of the visual language of Robert Wilson. I think it could match in style in terms of campaign and other promotional material.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
LS : I am interested in the topic of creating iconic modern form to the classical music and plots as far as the topics they touch are eternal.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LS : I was inspired with Memphis interior design style, Dutch glas-en-lood technique and contemporary visual culture.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
LS : The opera lovers.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
LS : The simplicity and boldness.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LS : The names of the posters are the names of the operas.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LS : Pencil, paper and Adobe Illustrator.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LS : Emotional impact.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LS : These are the digital posters. There is no space for mistake or flexibility of shape in them. Just due to the technique.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LS : A combination of visiting operas, exhibitions of modern art and exploring different poster inspiration on the internet.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LS : The first poster Madame Butterfly was the most challenging one - because it was a research of shapes and principle in visual expression. The other posters were based on that and were produced much quicker.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LS : I wanted to get a response to my design, to expose it to the world and to stay connected to audience.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LS : To think and create sharp - without unnecessary details.
