DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
KOA : This design was among a series of interior details that I had produced for a corporate firm in 2017. At the time I was in search of an elegant light fixture and thought it best to design the piece instead of buying already built items.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
KOA : I wanted and I think that I have achieved two goals during the design phase. first of all I wanted the lightsource to be centered 50cm away from the wall, secondly I wanted to achieve the lightest framework to support it. I had designed certain decorative elements on the wall so this fixture was aimed to look like a valuable jewelry on the already decorated wall.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
KOA : This design has been produced and is in use in Turkey's biggest pastry shop in Ankara. This design has also been awarded by A' Design and has gained international recognition. The next step for this design would be to design the family of fixtures for this design pattern and to do this in various unit colors.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
KOA : This design was prepared within an hours' time, within the duration of four months of site contract efforts.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
KOA : The formation of the design had been totally intuitive. I had already prepared a language of design for the interior space and instead of selecting a readily made fixture, designing the unit and having it manufactured seemed to be the best choice.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
KOA : The design rights of this product belong to me. I have registered the design rights of the product in Turkey.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
KOA : No, the item was manufactured strictly according to my shop drawings
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
KOA : The target customer is A+ segment of restaurants, bakeries or other similar commercial enterprises.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
KOA : The design is a mixture of humble but yet elegant materials and finishes in a similar manner to jewelry design.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
KOA : I used a simple paper and a pen at the site and then prepared the manufacture drawings in AutoCAD.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
KOA : After the design was finished the light fixtures were manufactured by a light fixture producing firm in İstanbul.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
KOA : The linear design language in which the fixture was designed had been used in the design of walls, ceilings, furniture, refrigerated cabinet fronts and doors.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
KOA : We had to hand-produce the glass cylinder as there were no existing parts that matched our requirements. This had its effects on both the price and the manufactury duration of the whole product.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
KOA : I had put so much effort in the design of the facility that I thought it deserved better recognition. I chose A' Design solely and presented my works. I am content from the results of this almost year-long duration of the competition's meticulous efforts.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
KOA : I would like to thank in special, the owner of the facility Mr. Reyhan Haciosmanoglu for his continuous support through all stages of the process, who has made possible all that has been built. My only deepest regret has been that unfortunately, Mr. Haciosmanoglu who had been a dear friend of mine, did not live long enough to see this significant achievement. He had passed away in February 2020. Undoubtedly, this award would have made him proud from all that we had achieved together.
