DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
HR : The idea is to bring together all elements used while serving ice cream desserts and make them appear as a whole.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
HR : The primary focus was to give a minimalistic perception and make the spoon appear that it belongs to the serving dish set and not just retrofitting.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
HR : Commercialize it.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
HR : Three months.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
HR : I designed this particular concept to change the conventional way of serving ice cream.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
HR : I intent to produce my own work.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
HR : It all started when dessert came in a conventional ice cream bowls and spoons on a separate plate. It provoked me to think why these elements are treated separately when they are meant to be together.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
HR : Icy is very much influenced by the contemporary design trends and also by faceted crystals of various shapes such as Marquise, Princess, etc.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
HR : Hotels and Restaurants
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
HR : This design has an aluminium base to support the crystals and also hold spoon at the base and these make Icy unique.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
HR : The name came up when I was arranging the set in order. And suddenly the frames began to appear as the word "ICY". The entire set also gives a perception of chill, cold and transparent ice crystals floating above the frames.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
HR : Solidworks and Keyshot
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
HR : The most unique aspect of ICY is that, it brings together all the elements required while serving ice cream by using a frame to support the crystal bowls and hold the spoon. It also has a magnet embedded at the base to keep the spoon intact.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
HR : I had few discussions with my designer friends to solve technical and manufacturing problems.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
HR : Technology is playing an important role for realizing this product in the way it is intended.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
HR : Study and research on materials which do not shield magnetic field and also magnets which has high curie temperature were done.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
HR : Casting the Aluminium frame with thin Sm2Co17 magnet embedded inside it.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
HR : I felt that this design is unique in terms of its functionality and aesthetics.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
HR : I had to drop many other ideas while developing this design because it will be difficult to manufacture. So, I had to think of a good idea which solves this manufacturing problems while the functionality remains the same.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
HR : The Crystals bowls have faceted surfaces. Even the grooves on the frame for holding these crystals have exactly the same surface facets. This is done so that the crystals sit only in one position without slipping off.
