DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

: Metric-Ganic Chen explores the notion of how civilization imprints knowledge and how humans have shaped the earth to create culture and history - through this lens, the sculptural bench is explored via the study of natural and mathematical patterns. Differentiating between inorganic and organic forms, the origami appearance of the timber is a representation of human knowledge based on mathematical calculations, which contrasts with the natural grain of the white oak representing the forest and earth.

DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

: Trying to have both emotional and physical interaction with viewers.

DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?

: I would like to find a great buyer that can provide my design a good home.

DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?

: Half year.

DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?

: It was designed for school course, but the design was something that i had in mind and always wanted to pursuit.

DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?

: I own all rights for my design and intended to sell it to a good buyer.

DI: What made you design this particular type of work?

: School course for furniture design.

DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?

: Yes, my school Lecturer Natasha Perkins, Con-di designer Mr. Ni, Lisa and Viva.

DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?

: Metric-Ganic means the combination of Geometric and Organic forms.

DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?

: Pencil and paper.

DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?

: Celebrating the purely of White Oak and enjoy the bench that rocks.

DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?

: Yes, My school's Lnterior Lecturer Natasha Perkins, Con-di furniture designer Mr. Ni, Lisa and Viva.

DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?

: 3D Routering was the technology that crave the pattern on the timber panels.

DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?

: No, It is more of an express of my own emotions

DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?

: The making. Shipping.

DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?

: Because my school asked me to consider as an option to publish my work.

DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?

: Metric-Ganic is my first time experience making a furniture, I was required to learn every step through out the make of the design.
