DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: To design an interesting 'curious' object.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: To get more distributors in more countries and to expand the range.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: I designed the concept in 1999 and it sat in a box until I managed to get it manufactured.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: Produced solely by Xmatrix.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: An interest in puzzles, graphic and packaging design.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Women buying for men. Young male.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: Most puzzles look like cheap toys.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: The playful Xmatrix brand name creates its own intrigue. This unique and magical ambigram logo is itself a puzzle. It has been developed to fit onto the product and the packaging so that it always reads correctly and plays on the idea of turning the puzzle 'upside-down'. X -marks the spot, the point of buried treasure, or unknown factor, MATRIX -womb, cavity in which something is formed or developed, or an array of elements set out in rows and columns.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: Hand designed and hand made mock-ups.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: Worked with 3D tool makers.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: Designing the tooling. Designing the logo and packaging.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: I wanted the product to be appreciated from a design perspective.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
: Learned about the complex process of injection mould making.
