DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: La Seóra hammock was inspired in Miami with the transculturation of two significant cultures in the City; the Cubans and the Americans. A general image of an American armchair is one of those huge ones, with the plush padding, the foot rest folding up, and the drink holder on your side, then we have the typical hammock from Cuba. The result is La Seóra which is a hybrid between a hammock a chaise longue and an armchair.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: I wanted to design something that looked completely new and visually stunning, but at the same time something which would improve the current issue of slouching in present hammocks made from net and fabric.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: I would love to see La Seóra being used all around the world..
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: This particular design was part of a urban sports park in Miami. La Seóra hammocks would be setup around the park in order to relax, read or watch a sport being played around the park such as basketball, tennis, american football etc.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: At the moment it is being produced by myself, however, if a large furniture manufacturer and global distributor is interested in leasing the design rights we are open to discussions.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: The target customer market for La Seóra is the high-end user, it is a luxury item.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: Well firstly it is not the norm to produce a hammock out of wood or any other solid material, all conventional hammocks are made from fabric or net. So, the difference is how you setup and design such a product such as a hammock which by nature is meant to be extremely comfortable and relaxing. It's unique int he way the plywood beams are configured, but not only that it is extremely ergonomical because the beams keep your back straight, there footrest adjusts according to your height for ideal comfort and there are integrated armrests which can open at your convenience. Integrating all these features seamlessly I believe sets La Seóra apart from other hammocks.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: In Greek hammock is 'eora' but I wanted something more tropical and exotic, so I combined it with the word siesta, the Spanish word for an afternoon sleep. The result; La Seóra.
