DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
FS : The design is a subtle re-interpretation of a classic chalice.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
FS : A colourful, lightweight and elegant drinking glass that is stackable and comes in different sizes. A free exploration and exercise in glassware design.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
FS : It would be great to see Cali succeed on the market.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
FS : The concept was developed in parallel with other ideas during the summer of 2024.
A quick side study for Officina Endorfino - the process took about month.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
FS : The design was developed as a personal project.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
FS : This is still an ongoing discussion with several potential partners.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
FS : I think there Is a place for colourful and well designed drinking glasses. Cali started out as a side project and quickly turned into something really special.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
FS : Not really.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
FS : The target customers would be interested in well crafted design objects that have a unique identity.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
FS : The design is following a modular, stackable concept. Cali comes in three different sizes.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
FS : The name uses the first few letters of the italian word "calice". This seemed fitting, given that the shape and initial inspiration.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
FS : From simple basic sketches directly into 3D.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
FS : The unique shape and material allow for many different colour combinations.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
FS : Cali is a personal project.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
FS : Production and material technology play an important part. The Cali glassware series is made from borosilicate glass. The material is known for its strength, durability and temperature resistance.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
FS : The design process was based on conceptual and formal research aimed at understanding material properties and opportunities of the category. Product development and refinement through traditional sketching and 3D modelling.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
FS : The main challenge was the necessity to create a series of modular and stackable drinking glasses in different sizes that also explore the formal possibilities of the material and make a visual statement.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
FS : I wanted to share the project and create more visibility. Hopefully the award is only the first step!
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
FS : The whole project was an interesting opportunity to develop unique design ideas in the area of glassware.
