DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
KD : 1. An object that can support itself on three legs and is stable
2. Be made to look like it was made with a single stoke.
3 use an array of only one shape (the circle in this case)
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
KD : We wanted to make an object that looked like it was made with one stroke.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
KD : We are experimenting with different pigmenting techniques and color variations
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
KD : The design of this object didn’t take more than a few days. The most time was spent in designing the 5 part mold for it.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
KD : The project was an idea that came to mind and turned into a final product.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
KD : We are currently producing this item in our workshop.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
KD : The main driving force was to make a candleholder different from the majority of candleholders made for tall candles.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
KD : The Alessi Juicy Salif Citrus Squezzer designed by Phillipe Starck was most likely a reason to go with a three-legged object
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
KD : The target customer is people who love unique handmade, modern home decor items.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
KD : Probably the fact that we have a candleholder made for a tall candle, that’s short and broad.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
KD : The object can be seen a single stroke object resembling a loop. Usually when we think of a loop a circle comes to mind. The only difference here, is that we are talking about 4 interconnected circles instead of just one.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
KD : Softimage for designing the object as well as the molds and Zbrush for creating booleans.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
KD : Probably the height/width/length ratio of a candleholder designed to house a tall candle.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
KD : We worked on this project from start to finish.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
KD : The object and its’ mold were designed digitally and were then 3d printed.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
KD : No it wasn’t.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
KD : The biggest challenge was to design the object’s mold.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
KD : We decided to see what an international board of judges would think about this design.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
KD : We definitely improved our mold-making skills and since then we’ve felt more confident in using a multi-part mold.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
KD : No. Thank you very much for the interview.
