DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SIJ : Better storage tools might not be the best way definitely.
Even without a storage tool, Let's create a desk where the work area is more mainly with no difficulty in storing and using.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SIJ : this desk is parted into 3 parts. the top transparent plate of the desk, semi-transparent drawer, and desk frame. even without a storage tool on the desk, we can create a desk in which the work area is more mainly with no difficulty in storing and using. according to the frequency of operation and motion of hands on the desk, the desk can be classified into the workspace, storage space, and the placing space. on this standard of area, we can freely arrange objects through A4-shaped TWO HOLES and A DRAWER, with seeing through the top transparent plate of the desk, by each user own work style. this transparent desk reveals various personalities, like democracy. on this desk, some users may keep the desk clean. and other users may let desk crazy style by customizing. or other users may block the plate by taping it to protect their privacy. because, how to arrange and what to have reveals their personalities.
democracy desk a.k.a a desk which disappears any storage tool. a desk which disappears any storage tools. many storage tools might not be the right way definitely. even without a storage tool, the transparent plate of the desk where storage tools are disappeared by A4-shaped 2 holes and a drawer makes the user workspace more spacious and comfortable. develope the concept of this desk open relationship. teamwork, where individual personalities are alive, creates synergy. one more step, with consideration for the marginalized people, this will be an educational experiment and talk about social issues(selfishness, bullying, poor learning, maladjustment, etc.) in society, schools, and families towards the value of going together without people behind. this is worth further study.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SIJ : to design a democratic work environment.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SIJ : the work process and culture of IDEO. open work space.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
SIJ : for a creative team based on creative individuals.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SIJ : Even without a storage tool, The transparent plate of the desk where storage tools are disappeared by 'A4-shaped 2 holes' and 'a drawer' makes the user’s workspace more spacious and comfortable.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SIJ : Democracy desk symbolize the character of a creative team based on creative individuals.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SIJ : if we imagine a well-arranged desk and work environment, we think storage. but I think reversely. If the arrangement rule like a storage tool disappeared and destroyed, It would solve the problem of the work environment.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SIJ : I have struggled against the usual mental model of the desk and the people who are worried about the new try with the different idea of the desk. Progressivity is a positive attitude to new changes and possibilities, and resistance to the inertia that is blind and natural.
A designer is a person with a habit of moving forward. It is the people who have to recognize the present age constantly, have the obligation to be ahead of the times, and have to propose a new future. Some people were confused about me.
Sometimes an exclusive people reveal their disgruntle and says, "Why do you do such design?"
Then I say, "Why are you so uncomfortable?"
