DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
KTNB : My main principle is to create a balanced design, elegant and simple as possible. I oftten go along the rivers of Duc Hoa district, Long An province, next to Ho Chi Minh city by motorbike. These rivers are tributaries of the river system of the Mekong Delta, one of the main food sources for Vietnam. I like to watch the wooden boats running slowly, brushing the hyacinths aside. The front of the boats is decorated with an impressive fish image, as a ritual to avoid bad luck and bring luck. There are people who choose those wooden boats as their home, year-round floating on the water. My inspiration and idea came to mind when I thought of the similarities between the wooden boat and the writing desk. Aren't they the means to help people work, show how they make a living? They are all places where people show their intelligence, bravery and determination to overcome difficulties in life. When you sit down to work, you are like controlling a boat. Must focus and have an overview.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
KTNB : That is the refinement of design language. I especially want to portray the distinctive beauty of the river region through the simplest possible design.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
KTNB : I will commission a reputable furniture factory to make it real. Thereby, I will find the optimal way to produce and develop my artwork. There will be a small adjustment in the size but that makes the product more complete. Besides, I am designing a furniture collection go with "Mekong". Of course, they have the same theme.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
KTNB : Two days.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
KTNB : I see a sketch in my notebook that i drew a few months ago by chance. It pretty rudimentary but reminded me of a boat slowly approaching with the waves of water patting softly. The Mekong River came to me, I wanted to turn it into a complete design.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
KTNB : I commissioned a large furniture company in Vietnam to produce the real sample. I hope to get suitable suggestions.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
KTNB : That is my love for my homeland.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
KTNB : I learn a lot from Western designers. But I don't want to be influenced too much by one person's style.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
KTNB : Those are people with personalities and not easily satisfied.
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
KTNB : The contiguity.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
KTNB : When designing this artwork, I thought about the wooden boats, the idyllic life in Mekong Delta- the land of nine dragons. "Mekong" is the name of the great river known to the world, passing through that land.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
KTNB : 3D Rhinoceros, Photoshop.
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
KTNB : It has local characteristic, but also commercial.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
KTNB : I work independently in the concept design process.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
KTNB : It helps me to process difficult parts of the product.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
KTNB : I view new designs around the world everyday. But I try to keep from obsessing over too much. When making this design, I listen the rhythm of contemporary design trends and combine with my own idea. The 4P principle marketing is one of my favorite research methods for new products.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
KTNB : The biggest challenge was to keep things succinct but still express my idea.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
KTNB : The dream of winning an international design competition has always been my big desire. I think I should boldly attend and do my best. One finds freedom in mind through courage.
DI: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
KTNB : I reinforce the overall perception of a design, moderating unnecessary and cumbersome details. I also learned new woodworking techniques.
DI: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
KTNB : No, I think it's enough. Thank you for your interview.
