DI: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
: This project is inspired by the Chinese idiom "Happiness." In traditional Chinese society, people focuses on farming who work so hard in the natural environment. They worship nature and life, so everything is spiritual and carries their expectations. "Magpie" is considered as a good fortune for the good news Birds, "plum" is the flowers open in spring earlier than others, when a magpie fly on the plum branch, represents happiness is coming.
DI: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
: It is designed to bring not only light but also happiness and best wish.
DI: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
: We will massivelly produce and market it in this year later.
DI: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
: It takes us nearly 3 weeks to design.
DI: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
: As a design studio, in addition to serve our clients we want to spread our traditional culture. So we decide to choose housewares and furniture to express it. Happiness is one of this project. Besides the lovely appearance and of the magpie will make it popular.
DI: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
: We intent to produce this work ourselves with the brand "Differ", which is a housewares and furniture brand made by us.
DI: What made you design this particular type of work?
: We draw the styling elements of plum blossom stem from the traditional Chinese painting, make the tray with mountain shape and the main color of ink black, restore the vigor and artistic conception of the Chinese plum blossom and enhance the sense of decoration.
DI: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
: No, influenced by traditional Chinese painting.
DI: Who is the target customer for his design?
: Young people who want to decorate their home
DI: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
: The bulb can be taken from the branch, it can be hold as a night light from desk to bed even to other space.
DI: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
: Its name as its appearance comes from Chinese culture: magpie stands on a plum tree branch meaning happiness is coming.
DI: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
: freehand sketching and Rhino
DI: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
: It is not only satisfied with lighting function, but can be a very interesting thing as a symbol of lucky and happiness.
DI: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
: We design it as a whole team with different backgrounds, which are marketers, advertisers and engineers except designers, to make it realized as mature as possible.
DI: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
: The main part of the bulb is made of silicone mold. Contact charging with magnet is adopted. Bracket part is the ABS mold production with gold-plated decoration, the base is also ABS mold production, and joined the metal plate to gain weight.
DI: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
: To design it we spend much time on researching traditional culture not only lighting devices.
DI: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
: The challenge is cultural communication used in functional products, we need to ensure the satisfaction of the modern function and the reduction of Chinese-style scenes.
DI: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
: As we want to promote our brand and studio all over the world, we attend this competition to develop the interest.
